an uncanny ability

Most of what I learned about people came from conversations. Only rarely did I actually participate in conversations, even more rarely did I initiate them. Sitting within a few feet of people I knew made it virtually impossible to shut out their conversations, although there were times when I tried. Most of the evenings, between my appearances on stage were spent going through lists of songs and singing the songs being sung. So I witnessed and participated in my share of exchanges, but the other source of my knowledge of our fellows came to me from Silver. She has an uncanny ability to memorize everything said around her. I have a similar ability to capture words in passing but Silver seems to be quicker and more exact in the precise wordings. She is younger than I am. I used to be better at it.
